The Popes of the middle Ages were very powerful and highly influential people during the middle ages. This was the period of the crusades mostly all of the medieval people were Christian and from all places travelled nearly three thousand miles to the Holy Land. The popes were so powerful that they could actually decide if someone was going to give something up to the church whether it is land or a good. http://www.middle-ages.org.uk/popes-middle-ages.htm
The popes were the religious leaders of Christianity. The popes were often advised by the cardinals that helped them make chioces . The popes could chooses to exclude people from the church also, some reasons would be for not honnoring god or something else along those lines.
When a pope was choosen they were probably the son or in the same family as the one before. This was because they believed in tradition and that that leadership of being a popes was passed along in the family. Also only boys were choosen to be popes.
